The United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development

Committee Intro

The United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development (UNCSTD) serves as the primary intergovernmental forum for discussing how science, technology, and innovation can be harnessed to promote sustainable development worldwide. In the context of CSIAMUN, the UNCSTD committee encourages delegates to explore inclusive policies, equitable access to digital infrastructure, and innovative solutions that bridge technological divides between nations. Delegates will be challenged to balance the rapid pace of technological change with ethical considerations, ensuring that scientific advancement benefits all members of the global community.

Agenda Intro

Agenda A:

Developing International Cooperation For the Stabilization of the Rare Earth Supply Chain

Agenda A addresses the urgent need for international cooperation to stabilize the global supply of rare earth elements (REEs). These minerals are essential for modern technologies, ranging from everyday devices to advanced military systems. Delegates of the UNCSTD will focus on resolving the overconcentration of REEs in certain countries, the weaponization of exports, and equitable mining practices. Our goal is to provide a more stable and sustainable REE supply chain, ultimately fostering technological innovation worldwide.

Agenda B:

The Equitable Collaboration of Countries on Sustainable Space Technology

Agenda B addresses The Equitable Use of Sustainable Space Technology. As access to space becomes increasingly viable for both governmental and private actors, the global community faces the challenge of ensuring that space-based technologies are developed and utilized in a fair, inclusive, and environmentally responsible manner In the UNCSTD committee, delegates will explore strategies to share the benefits of space research and infrastructure equitably, prevent the monopolization of orbital resources, and promote sustainability in space exploration and utilization. The goal is to craft solutions that guarantee all nations, regardless of economic capacity, can participate in and benefit from the long-term development of space technology.

DEPUTY CHAIR – Mia Davis

Dear delegates,

Welcome to CSIAMUN XVII — and more specifically, to the UNCSTD.
My name is Mia Davis, and I have the privilege of serving as your Head Chair for the Commission on Science and Technology for Development.

In a world where innovation is accelerating faster than ever, science and technology don’t just shape our future — they define it. Over the next three days, we’ll be diving deep into the questions that matter: How do we ensure that technological growth doesn’t leave anyone behind? What happens when ethics lag behind invention? And who gets to decide what “progress” really means?

Our committee will challenge you to think critically, debate constructively, and write with purpose. Expect a fast-paced, idea-rich environment where collaboration matters just as much as competition. Whether you’re a veteran delegate or new to MUN, I encourage you to lean in, stay curious, and trust the process.

I can’t wait to see where your voices will take us.

Best,
Mia Davis
